Amazon Echo has got its competitor from our friendly available-in-every-smartphone app Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. Yes, Facebook might launch it's very own video chat device in May, as reported in Cheddar.com.
Amazon Echo has been a game changer and it seems that Facebook is all set to compete Echo with Portal. Yes, the device is named "Portal". According to various sources, the device is an augmented reality video device that will be controlled using voice commands along with facial recognition.
The official announcement is expected at F8, the annual developer conference in May. Facebook's Portal will be competing hardware consumer giants Google and Amazon both of which are having their voice-controlled speakers in the market.
Portal will come with a wide-lens camera which will be capable of detecting faces and associate them with their Facebook accounts. It will be able to hear your commands and perform them just like other voice controlled speakers. The device will have its own artificial intelligence.
According to Cheddar.com, the device is designed to work indoors and be controlled through voice commands. If everything goes as per the plan, Portal will be the first company's secretive tech lab, Building 8, which was in the news last year when Regina Dugan, the former Google & DARPA executive Facebook hired to lead the division, suddenly left after 18 months on the job.
Facebook had invested in a virtual reality headset Oculus Rift but it didn't see the limelight. If the Portal voice-controlled speaker will be launched, the device would probably be priced at some $499.
